For Immediate Release

The Phoenix Bobcats Track & Field club traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina in search of gold. The track team found a pot at the 2008 USATF Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of University of North Carlonia – Charlotte.

The meet began with Youth Boy Jamaal Jones winning the Pentathlon. The next day his older brother, Erwin D. Jones Jr. won the Intermediate division of the Decathlon by over 1400 points. The Bobcats have two sets of Triplets on their team. The Dyson triplets, Renee, Lizabeth, and Taylor competed in the Youth Girls Javelin. All three girls came home with medals. Renee is the National Champion throwing 31.02 meters / 103 feet, followed with third place finish by Lizabeth and eighth place by Taylor. Renee has won the Javelin two years in a row.

Cedric Jacobs-Jones, brother to Erwin and Jamaal Jones placed 4th in the Midget division of the Javelin with a throw of 37.55 meters. Jamaal and Erwin Jr. each placed second in their respective division of the Javelin. Jamaal threw 49.63 meters and Erwin threw 50.31 meters. Jamaal also finished second in the Triple Jump and High Jump. They both attend Shadow Mountain High School

The second set of triplets on the team, the Matiski, Matthew, Mark and Thomas. With strong performances in their preliminary races all three boys made it to the finals of their races. Matthew and Mark qualified by winning their heats of the 800 meter run, while Thomas set a personal best to make it to the final of the 1500 meter run on Final Sunday.

In the 800 meter final, Matthew brought home a National title with a phenomenal 1:59.48 run to the tape. Not to be outdone (by much), brother Mark also broke the two minute barrier with a superb 1:59.89 in third place, just two hundredths of a seconds out of the runner up position and a scant 37 hundreths of a second behind Matthew. Matthew's and Mark's times are the two fastest times ever by an Arizona Youth boys track runner, shattering the previous state record by more than five full seconds

The team will continue their medal search with four more events on Final Sunday. Laura Orlie who also medaled finishing sixth in the Intermediate division of the 3000 meter will compete in the 1500 meter final. Erwin Jr. will be in the 110 meter Hurdle final and Jamaal will compete in the Long jump.

The Phoenix Bobcats practice at Shadow Mountain High School and are coached by Erwin D. Jones, Brad Gettleman, Jocelyn Gaffney, Jeff Novacek, Derek Elmore, and Summer Pierson.
